01. Salut, Noktu, CELESTIA is one of the oldest french Black Metal-bands and now already active since ten years. When you think about these years which feeling is stronger: the pride to be still there in the scene or the wistful if you take a look on the development of Black Metal between 1995 and 2005?
Yes, a bit more than ten years now. Thus, I do not consider this decade as something very active since the band was dormant during these past months. Anyway, the most important is that we reached now the needed maturity to record our second album. Looking at these 10 years being involved more or less into the Black Metal movement… I do not think, I will be able to write positive words about this, sorry. Black Metal is the homeland of all kinds of frustrated creatures hidden behind their labels and their “cdr” bands. Well, no need to waste my time on them. I feel far away from their world anyway. So far away…
02. 1997 the first demo tape “Evanescence” was released. I think, many people don’t know or own this cassette. So tell us please: How sound CELESTIA at that time and how would you assess your first steps in music in today's view?
Let’s say that the sound on this demo was not comparable with the new sound of Celestia from 2005. When you record with the worst equipment possible, you have to expect the worst. That’s what happened on these demo releases. Fortunately, our sound evolved and I think that we found what we were looking for now.
03. After the promocassette “A dying out ecstasy” in 1998, the splittape with DRAUGHWATH (today BLACKDEATH) in the same year and the in 1999 released “Infected by rats”-demo the first CELESTIA-(mini) CD was recorded: “A cave full of bats”. And in my opinion these included already most of the trademarks which should make your band unique in later times: a cold, melancholical atmosphere; dark, morbid lyrics and the incomparably, despair spitting voice of you, Sir Noktu Geiistmortt. Is it exactly that, how Black Metal (musically) in your understanding should be: cold, melancholical, despaired and total dark?
“A Cave full of Bats” (God ! I hate this title !) is certainly our first decent recording. Black Metal must indeed be cold, melancholic and dark. Nowadays, 99% of the bands do not know how to express Darkness with their music. Black Metal became a very vulgar kind of music. Well, this was predictable 10 years ago and I’ve been repeating this for years now, but the war against mediocrity is over now. We lost. Thery’re here and we must live with them. Fortunately, distance is on my side and the filth is far away.
Today, I live in the best place (imo) to compose Black Metal. I took a certain distance from the modern world and I am now surrounded by old medieval ruins, insects and deep dark forests. An adequate place to compose Black Metal and feel inspirations for lyrics.
04. According the title “Crucified dead flesh” the observer can see on front of the LP dead crucified flesh, in this case a hedgehog. No trouble with militant animal protectors? Or has only nobody of them take a notice of that because the LP was so strictly limited? Was the covermotive only pure provocation or is there a deeper sense behind?
No troubles with anyone since the LP was only printed to 200 copies. This was done when I experienced some luciferian theories, playing with flesh is supposed to make yourself stronger. Well, nothing really changed. Flesh, dead or alive is disgusting at the same level, both smells abominable.
05. After numerous cassette- and EP-releases 2002 the time has come: the first complete CELESTIA-album “Apparitia – Sumptuous spectre” was released! Released by FULLMOON PROD. from overseas and the CD included eight not really new songs… What were the reasons for this decision? Were you not satisfied with the old versions of the songs? Or was it your intention to pack the eight absolutely best CELESTIA-songs on one album, no matter how old they are?
Some songs were recorded on various demos with a poor sound and I thought that the best thing will be to rerecord them. When I’m not satisfied of one recording, I tend to think that rerecording the song can be something interesting so, that’s what happened for “Apparitia” and this is what will certainly happen in the future again. I do not try to follow a pre-etablished principle on that matter.
06. In general it seems very confuse to me that I can found so many songs repeatedly on the several CELESTIA-releases. Why? For example “Spectra”, undoubtedly one of your most brilliant songs, can be heard at least on four of your releases!
If you mix promo cassettes and seven inch demos etc… Yes Spectra has several different versions. Each time, versions are improved in my opinion. But we never reached the absolute quality. Absolute quality will be only on the new Celestia album, at least that’s what I think now.
07. I could imagine that some people were frightened after taking a look in the “Apparatia”-booklet and reading “Celestia 1933” under your aesthetic old-styled bandpicture… Be honest: Would you only provocate some “political correctness-guys” or was really a special fascination for history events the main reason to use “Celestia 1933”? You must know, in Germany most of the people react very sensitive on this topic and fast, very fast the “evil” term NSBM goes around…
Maybe in germany, the date of 1933 has a certain importance, but Germany is not anymore the center of the world so this date can be seen as an illustration of my own aesthetic perspectives. A certain appreciation for the old times, when the white man has still it own dignity. What’s wrong with National socialism ? Nowadays, it seems so diabolical but in 1930’s, national socialism leaded Germany to be one of the strongest nations of the world. It’s sure that I would not have enjoyed to be a Jew or a homosexual sick creature at this period of time but since I do not really appreciate this religion nor homosexuals in general, I really don’t care. There’s some left winged people who tend to think that Metal music will have been forbidden if National Socialism would have taken control of the world. I can maybe agree on this point. But I think that metal music is like a nigger music today. So, this does not really need to exist. At least at my own eyes. I’ve never been to Wacken but I’ve had the displeasure to visit some various metal events or even pretending “Black Metal” ones and what I saw was only guys puking and pissing on themselves while they were drinking “beers”. So, now, let’s choose between metal festivals where humans are behaving like monkeys or classical music events where gentlemen are human. Well, as for me, the choice is done. I never imagined myself living the life of an animal…
So I will go to the Classical music event. But nowadays, this is the kind of manifestation that tend to disappear and we are faced the downfall of the white civilization… But that’s another story.
08. One of the last official CELESTIA-releases was the “Dead insecta sequestration”-CD, released from AGONIA REC./Poland. I´ve read in an interview in an other zine that you was not very satisfied with the work of these label. What was wrong with them? And what are the consequences for you in the future?
In fact, we consider this release as a bootleg. Agonia records are big rip offs and money makers. They printed and reprinted this CD again and again and the band has not even got a single copy of it.
Agonia records is the perfect example of our nowadays label scene. There’s no more unity in the scene, not that I really care about fraternity... One band is ripped off and other bands continue to sign with this label. No need to say that Celestia is strongly against that jewish business.
09. When I read some of your lyrics I have the impression you like women very much…dead women. Are you working up here any interpersonal disappointments? Which attitude you have generally in opposite to women who are “feeling at home” in the male-dominated Black Metal-scene?
I cannot deny the fact that women have a certain place in my lyrics since they had a certain place also in the story of my own evolution. I used to find a certain pleasure into destructive relations with ladies. Let’s say, that I am someone curious by nature and my curiosity lead me to go beyond the limits of the reasonable. It seems that I used to give more attention to what I wanted to see than what was really facing myself. This game is over now since I reached a certain level in my evolution where women have less importance now. Let’s say to end this that I was tired of listening to the same song.
10. Would you say that the deep involvement in Black Metal was a help for you to develop a strong personality and to learn and find out more about you and the mysteries of life?
“If you want to visit my temple, you will have to forget your judeo/Christian principles”.
Reaching the level where you can parallel your own appreciation of life values to the stones of a temple, means that you reached a certain degree of evolution where you are able to practice what you preach. Life must be seen under a religious perspective where the guide can only be your own conscience. Exterior influences only lead to human weaknesses. The truth can be found in Darkness, then Darkness will become an immense source of light.
11. Usually CELESTIA do their recordings in the Rosenkrantz-studios. This name sounds very mystique, occult to me… Can you say me something to your recording-place? Is it merely a rehearsal-room or do really exist a place named “Rosenkrantz”? In what way these place has an influence on the final version of a CELESTIA-song?
Rosenkrantz is no more since we had to abstain from the services of Fureiss. To be more clear, he was fired from the band. I have nothing more to say about this subject.
12. With “Ea, lord of the dephts” and “Black spell of destruction” you´ve covered two BURZUM-songs. So I suppose that CELESTIA and especially you, Noktu, are very close to the music of the Count. Is it so? Was the studying of the early works of Grishnackh one of the starting points to found CELESTIA and get fascinated of Black Metal? How do you think about the today´s person Count Grishnackh/Varg Vikernes?
I used to like very much the Burzum’s approach of Black Metal. That’s why we naturally covered these songs when it was the “cover time” of our past line-up. But it was a long time ago. I haven’t listened to Burzum cds for almost 10 years or something now. Let’s say that the page has been read now. Regarding the personality of Varg Vikernes nowadays, I don’t think that I will be able to say any bad things regarding his own points of view since I think that we must share some. I think this character offers a rather lucid appreciation regarding the hypocrite decaying world we live in.
13. It seems a bit strange to me that you name your drummer Astrelyia sometimes “Lady Astrelyia”…or is it a name he was given to himself? Or is it only a joke which outstanding people like me must not understand?
Let’s call this a” private joke”.
Next question please.
14. CELESTIA-releases can be recognize on a special aesthetic; lyrical and pictorial. Only a coincidence or were you consciously setting great store on it? And if yes: Plays aesthetic an important role far away from music in your life?
Celestia is sincere in its interpretation of Black Metal. Sincerity means that the aura created around this project is the inner light reflecting from within ourselves. We do not try to achieve something, we just expose ourselves to the light of this corrupted world without “masks”.
15. 2002 CELESTIA toured with TAAKE and HORNA across europe and you also played for the very first time in Germany. Have you good memories on the tour? Furthermore you made on your gig in Elterlein the impression to me as if you, while playing live, completely dip deep in an other world, you haven´t notice something about you… For you a kind of transcendence? What is happen in you in such moments?
Playing around Europe is an interesting experience I must say. But travelling with Taake only brings us inconveniences. Let’s say that we do not share the same conception of Black Metal. At least, listening to reggae music is not really what we enjoy the most when we’re travelling.
When I perform a live Ritual I must admit that I am not really able to pay attention to what’s happening around me or in front of me.
16. Beside CELESTIA you´re playing in some other bands: MORTIFERA, GESTAPO 666, PESTE NOIRE and GENOCIDE KOMMANDO. Could you give us here a view about every band and their releases? What is so special on MORTIFERA & co. that you must play also there?
Mortifera released one album last year. Musically Mortifera is slower than Celestia, certainly more necro and Dark with a totally different concept. Gestapo 666 is more a primitive Raw Black Metal project. I do not really play in Peste Noire, I just helped him to play bass in one of his demos. As for Genocide Kommando, this was more a studio project than a real band with a real and serious concept. Especially when you have to make music with the creature who was involved in this project. Well, I really regret this album. Everything turned out to be a generic Black Metal project. I also heard that Nocturnus is going to make another album. In fact we have a deal for two albums and for what I know, he will get plenty of money if he makes a second album alone. I guess he is only doing this for money… Nowadays most of the Black Metal bands only care about such aspects.
17. DRAKKAR PROD. is your label, Noktu, and by now a soundful name in the worldwide underground, I think in great releases like TSJUDER´s “Kill for satan”, WATAIN´s “Casus luciferi”, MÜTIILATION´s “Black millennium”, ALTAR OF PERVERSION´s “From dead temples”, etc…. It seems clear to me that you make only contracts with bands which you personally like, but which criterions in addition to that are important for you? Do you meet the musicians before sign a contract to see that they are what they seems to be? Or can you trust in that way your personal “instinct”?
Yes, I sign bands I like and with whom I am able to communicate with. I like also to meet the musicians in person and being able to see who they really are. Sometimes, it only brings dissapointment. That’s why some bands mentioned up here are no more under our wings.
18. Labels and distributions nowadays becomes more and more, what makes DRAKKAR in your opinion different from all the others? Which conditions can musicians expect from DRAKKAR: payed studiotime, a fair participation in CD/LP-sales, organization of gigs/tour, worldwide distribution, absolute artistically freedom?
The difference is that we are here since 1994. Other labels are just opportunists doing promotion like prostitutes on lousy metal forum in order to attract more clients. We don’t need promotion, we are not playing with these worms. Drakkar Productions is an underground label who offers professional opportunities to our artists. We manage professional EURO tour in nightliners, pay studio expenses, everything a big label can offer. But we keep an underground attitude. So far, no jewish bar codes were added on our releases.
19. Do you think that the cult which is made nowadays about the notorious “Black legions”-bands is justified? What is so special on this mysterious movement?
There’s some trendy movement in the Black Metal scene, it was a time when it was Vampyric wimpy keyboard music, then we had the NSBM trend. Nowadays we have the Cut your flesh for Him trend everywhere. That always amused me.
20. Have you an explanation why music generally is so important for the human race?
I don’t know. Maybe, it’s a way for them to escape from the sad reality of this filthy world.
21. Noktu, in a former interview with you I've read that you like to travel around the globe. Are there any countries or regions which have impressed you very much? Which destinations you've planned for the future?
Yes, it’s true. I had the opportunity to visit Finland a couple of months ago. I was quite impressed by the quality of life of this country. No insecurity, clean streets, mostly no immigrants. Well, was a really pleasant time there. I plan to visit north America for spring 2006. But besides that, nothing is planned yet even if there’s still many destinations that have caught my interest.
22. France is the country where you were born. Also the country, where you will be dying? How deep you feel rooted in your homeland? Is it conceivable for you to build up a new existence in a later moment in your life elsewhere in the world? Or don´t you like to think about things concerning your person which cross the here and now?
Maybe not. France is no more you know. Our country is invaded now by more than 20 millions of very aggressive muslims who are trying to impose their sub-culture (a kind of mix of their own fanatic religion and nigger ganster thing). Also, they enjoy humiliating white people, for example, if you have long hair and if you’re dressed in black, they will insult you in the streets. Also, there’s a phobia of racism in our country. I don’t know why but it seems it’s almost forbidden here to say the word “Arab”. Immediately you are put into a certain category of people. Also the French government is little by little establishing a kind of dictatorial supremacy. Controlling medias for example. Jacques Chirac likes to choose who will appear on TV in certain programs, he can also cancel the participation of someone he doesn’t like in a certain program. Everything is controlled by them and their judeo/Capitalist values. It seems that they want to annihilate dignity and honesty for the masses. They glorify all the human diseases. For example, if you’re a homosexual nowadays in France, you have a better chance of leading an important position. That’s why I am not able to recognize my own country. To answer your question, I do not know if I will be able to finish peacefully my days in France. People like me are undesirable guests you know.
23. The french people has vote in spring this year against the European Constitution. In your opinion a right and important step?
In fact the French people are lost and confused. Plus the French government was not really able to explain to the French people the real status of the situation. French people are disappointed from their government and they expressed this when they massively voted “no” months ago. Since France entered into this magnificient Europe, we were only able to see prices reaching the top of intolerance. Every price was at least raised for 50%. Now, the French government was proud to announce that prices were going down by 2%. In my opinion this is just bullshit. Another political strategy to maintain these poor French people in that state of coma. We will be able to see in few years a complet victory of the jewish capitalism cruel system. Problem is nowadays people think more about their own stomach than these fake promises from the rotten corrupted politicians.
24. You said in the past that CELESTIA do rehearse very sporadic and work rarely on new songs… That sounds not promising for the chance of a new album. Can you neverteheless give us a spark of hope on the cloudy horizon?
Since that we will soon be able to see sunrays piercing this cloudy horizon…
A new album will be recorded in two weeks.
25. Our conversation ends here, Noktu. I think, we touched almost every point which is relevant in connection with CELESTIA…or have you still something important to say? In any case, my last word is “thanks”!
We are actually working on a new webpage since the band is resurrected now. More information will be certainly published there. At the moment, Celestia is without a label. But our intention is to record first this long awaited album and then take care of that detail later.
We would like also to play some selected gigs, maybe something again in Germany. I suggest you keep your eyes open in our direction.
